Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that makes Celebrex, said on Monday it will stop selling the drug at its online pharmacy after the Food and Drug Administration rejected the generic equivalent of the popular arthritis drug, Celebrex.
The FDA's decision to reject the generic version of Celebrex, Pfizer Inc., would be the latest step in a series of setbacks in the battle to get Pfizer to launch its own generic version of the drug, Celebrex.
Pfizer's Celebrex, approved in December, was developed by an Australian biotech firm in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson.
On Monday, Pfizer said it was working with Johnson & Johnson to develop a generic version of the drug that would compete with the brand name version.
The company also said it would update its online pharmacy to include the generic version of the drug, after the FDA rejected a copy of the drug in the United States.
Pfizer said that while its online pharmacy is no longer being run by a third-party company, it will continue to provide customer support and information to other pharmacies and drug manufacturers.
The FDA decision on the generic Celebrex comes two months after Pfizer, which makes Celebrex, announced it would stop selling the drug at its online pharmacy after the FDA rejected the generic version of the arthritis drug.
Pfizer said it would review the FDA decision and provide comments and recommendations to other pharmaceutical companies.
"The decision to reject the generic version is a major step in changing the way the company can best serve patients," said David Phillips, president of Pfizer Consumer Healthcare.
Pfizer said that it has worked with Johnson & Johnson to develop a generic version of Celebrex and to ensure it remains on the market.

The medicine is also not indicted for use in patients suffering from lung problems (such as asthma), heart diseases (such as heart failure, recent heart attack, heart block), severe liver disease (such as advanced hepatic insufficiency) and/or kidney disease (such as advanced renal insufficiency).
Before taking CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor if you have diabetes, raised blood pressure, increased cholesterol, signs of fluid retention (such as swollen ankles and feet) and/or hyperkalemia (increased potassium level in blood).
CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in pregnant and breast-feeding women.
CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in children and adolescents (aged 2 to 17 years) to manage only juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and is advised to be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years/above) after consulting the doctor.
The most common side effects of taking CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE are high blood pressure, shortness of breath, sore throat, cough, headache, nausea and dizziness. Consult your doctor if any of these symptoms worsen.

The decision follows a long-established safety and efficacy study on celecoxib in rheumatoid patients. The clinical trial, called the "Celebrex" study, was designed to determine the effects of celecoxib, the active ingredient in Celebrex, on bone and joint symptoms in rheumatoid patients.
Celebrex is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, a form of arthritis in the joints that causes pain and stiffness in joints such as the hands, wrists, elbows, knees, and feet. Celebrex was approved by the FDA in 1987, and it is now a well-established drug for rheumatoid arthritis. Celebrex works by blocking the production of prostaglandins, which in turn increases inflammation. The increased prostaglandins release into the bloodstream, which causes pain and swelling in the body. Celebrex is available by prescription only.

In a subsequent study, the authors found no evidence of increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding in patients taking 400 mg of Celebrex daily.
It works by blocking the production of prostaglandins, which in turn causes inflammation and pain in the body.
